Every year, thousands of vulnerable individuals living with autism, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, and other cognitive disabilities wander from safety, often with tragic consequences. The statistics are alarming. Six in ten people living with dementia will wander at least once, and nearly half of children with autism have a tendency to wander from safe environments. Even more concerning, more than one-third of children with autism who wander cannot communicate their name or identifying information. In Houston, these emergencies are especially dangerous. The Houston Police Department has responded to approximately 94 after-hours wandering incidents involving individuals with disabilities over the past three years.  Houston’s 2,500 miles of waterways, countless highways, and heavy traffic make every minute critical.

Project Lifesaver equips specially trained Houston Police officers with proven radio-frequency locating technology that dramatically improves the speed and accuracy of searches for missing individuals. The program provides wearable transmitter bracelets, specialized search equipment, officer training, and caregiver education; giving families peace of mind while helping officers bring loved ones home safely.
